The History and Practices of the Shattariyya Tariqa in Malaysia

Shattariyya is one of the Sufi orders which has been practiced in Malaysia by the locals for years. Howeever it has never gained a full attention by the scholars compared to other Sufi orders such as the Naqshabadiyya and Ahmadiyya Idrisiyya shools. Thus, the objectives of the paper are; firstly, to describe the history of the order in Malaysia, and secondly, to explore the practices by its followers in Malaysia.

Born in 1965, I obtained my BA Hons from the National University of Malaysia in 1989. In 1990, I furthered my study at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and obtained my MA in the History of Muslim Socities and later my Ph.D in the South-east Asia studies under the supervision of Prof. Vladimir I.Bragingsky. Currently as Senior Lecturer at the National University, my field of interest is Sufism and its practices whereby most of my teaching at the University and written papers are based upon which I had presented at local and international arenas.
