Anthropology and photography have come on the scene together in the 19th century. One of the first use of still pictures in the fieldwork was carried out by Alfred Cort Haddon in the expedition to Torres Straits Islands in 1898. As a mechanical by-product of European technology, camera has taken a significant role during fieldworks of ethnographers. Argonauts of the Western Pacific of Malinowski, a turning point of anthropology, has brought a new ethnographic writing which has changed the role photography in anthropology. In this paper it will be discussed the visual and the text in their historical context.
