Universities’ Role on Improving the Architects’ Continuous Professional Development Programs: A Pedagogy-based Theme
Architecture is a vigorous profession with its outcomes depending mostly on the skills and knowledge of the architects. Schools of Architecture internationally require their graduates gaining professional experience through working for architectural firms prior to awarding of professional standing.
In the UK, RIBA’s Syllabus Outline includes general advice Guidance for Stage 1 Professional Experience, (RIBA c2003). After graduation, RIBA asks its members to join different courses during their profession years following a continuous professional development requirement, CPD. Other Architecture accreditation boards around the world follow similar steps as RIBA in ensuring a continuous education of their professional members. This paper calls for new mechanism in setting the conditions surrounding professional development of the Architects. Schools of Architecture should be formally integrated into the CPD programs through enrolling professionals in their taught courses for one semester in each academic year. The paper will illustrate how joining the university during their profession will ensure integrating the built industry with the theoretical advancement of Architecture with practice based information in forming university teaching in return.
